In Memoriam

Judge Jacqueline R. Griffin

The Honorable Jacqueline R. Griffin, Senior Judge at the Fifth District Court of Appeal, passed away on Thursday September 10, 2015 from cancer, having lived a full and vibrant life. This is profoundly heartbreaking for the court; Judge Griffin will forever hold a special place in our memories and hearts.

Without a question or doubt, Judge Griffin had a passion for the law. She worked extremely hard, giving attention, care, and effort to each and every case to come across her desk, dedicated to reaching the right decision. Despite having been diagnosed with cancer, Judge Griffin remained faithful and diligent in her search for justice. Judge Griffin was extremely intelligent, thoughtful, insightful, well-reasoned, and an exceptional writer with a clear and strong voice. These qualities are forever documented in her body of work while on the court, having authored over 3100 opinions.

At the court's 2014 Holiday Luncheon, while exiting the building, she turned, smiled, and issued a simple, yet singularly important edict: "Go forth and do good!" She cared about the people with whom she worked, and challenged them to give their best each and every day. We embrace and endeavor to carry out her edict.

Judge Griffin once shared: "A good lawyer is a beautiful thing."  Judge Griffin was more than that. She was a great lawyer, exceptional judge, and even better person. Those of us, current and past who were fortunate to have the honor of serving with Judge Griffin, are better for the experience. We will miss our friend and colleague.

Judge Griffin was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts but made her home in Winter Park, FL. She received a B.A. degree from University of North Carolina in 1968, a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from the University of Florida in 1970, and her J.D. with high honors in 1975, also from the University of Florida.

She practiced law from 1975 until she was appointed to the Fifth District Court of Appeal in 1990, and served in that capacity until her retirement in 2014. She was Chief Judge of the Fifth District Court of Appeal from 1997-1999.
